Statement of Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez on the Death of Most Reverend William F. Murphy, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Rockville Centre

I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Most Reverend William F. Murphy, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

When I was appointed an auxiliary bishop of that diocese in 2012, Bishop Murphy ordained me as a bishop. From that time until his retirement as Ordinary in 2016 and for years after, he generously shared his wise counsel and deep experience as a shepherd and an administrator. We remained close friends after my assignments to Cleveland and Philadelphia. I am deeply grateful for the gift of his life and his priesthood.

Bishop Murphy was known for his pastoral leadership and zeal for evangelization in the spirit of Missionary Discipleship. He actively cultivated ecumenical and interfaith dialogue and was a leading force behind The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, an enduring gift to the Church and the world.

The Church in the United States mourns Bishop Murphy’s passing and we give thanks to God for the gift of his life and ministry. I extend prayerful condolences to his family and friends as well as the priests, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the Archdiocese of Boston.

May Bishop Murphy enter into eternal life through the mercy of almighty God, and may our Blessed Mother console all those who loved and respected him.

Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez
Archbishop of Philadelphia
